Searching for a new job, regardless of the industry, is incredibly competitive and it’s not just how we work that’s changing but also the way we find work. Staying ahead of other applicants is essential to not only find your dream job but also securing that perfect role.

From writing your CV to prepping for an interview, there are numerous ways you can utilise AI to achieve your career goals. Here are six tips for using AI ethically and efficiently in your job search.

1. Build a strong portfolio

A strong online presence is essential for any role, but especially those in the tech industry, because it serves as your portfolio and is a way of getting your work and skills seen by potential employers. AI can be used to generate content ideas based on the area you want to work in, such as for blog posts to boost your SEO presence or even for creative portfolio projects, but it can also be used to help you spot any gaps in your site that could be holding you back from securing that dream job.

2. Find the right role based on your skills

Sorting through job listings and analysing requirements and salary ranges can be incredibly time-consuming, but that’s where AI comes in. Whether you use ChatGPT or dedicated tools like Autojob and Talentprise, you can feed in your skills, experience and what you’re looking for from a career and it will help you narrow down the options to find the perfect position.

Maybe you want to work remotely or perhaps you’re seeking a job in a specific town or city; maybe you want to relocate to a whole new location or maybe you need a part-time role. Once you’ve narrowed down your values and skills, you’ll be in a better position to find your perfect job.

3. Optimise your CV

While generating your entire CV using AI is frowned upon, it can be a great way to identify any skill gaps and optimise each resume for specific roles if you’re applying more broadly. The reality is that recruiters often use algorithms and automated applicant tracking systems to scan CVs for the right keywords, so you might be losing out on perfect roles if your CV doesn’t feature the right words. AI tools can help you ensure your resume makes it past this crucial step to book in more interviews.

4. Ask for advice

When you’re deep in the job search process, it can be hard to plan out an effective roadmap that will help you use your time more efficiently. So, why not ask ChatGPT for its thoughts? For example, you might have several years’ experience in a different field that could still be of value in a tech role but you might have overlooked. AI might suggest a niche area of software development you haven’t considered, or a way of tying in your passions to your job to make it more suitable.

5. Draft a base cover letter

A good rule of thumb is to tailor your cover letter for the job you’re applying for, but AI can be a great tool for creating a base letter that you can then amend for the specific requirements of each job. Just make sure that the information AI is providing you with is actually correct, and accurately reflects your skills, as it has a tendency to get confused and generate false information. A great way to use AI effectively is to dictate the tone you’d like the letter to be in, whether that’s professional or academically focused, or prioritise certain skills and competencies.

6. Prep for your interview

We’ve focused on using AI in the lead-up to the interview, but its value doesn’t end there. ChatGPT can also be useful as prep assistants to get you ready for the interview itself. Landing an interview is an exciting step in the process but it can also be nerve-wracking. Why not ask ChatGPT to ask you about the company so you will feel confident about answering questions on their focus and mission, or if there are technical questions, use it to prepare and revise.

You can also ask chatbots the type of questions you might expect, prompting it by asking “I have an interview for [insert your role here] at [insert the company you’re interviewing with]—what types of questions can I expect to be asked?”. Alternatively, prompt it to take on the persona of the interviewer and ask you questions on your resume and skills, so you can practice your answers.

Be aware of pitfalls

Always remember that while AI offers huge advantages to your job search, it remains important to be aware of potential drawbacks. Relying too heavily on AI generated content can result in your applications becoming too generic and lacking an authentic voice. There is also the potential for many job seekers to be using the same AI tools with similar prompts, meaning your material is less likely to stand out if not thoroughly personalised. Don’t forget the value of originality and your own personality.

Similarly, some employers will already be using detection tools to identify AI content, so maintaining transparency when using these tools is important. AI should enhance, not replace, your individual qualifications and perspective.

AI as your career partner

There is no doubt that AI developments have transformed the job search process, making it more efficient and tailored to your individual strengths. From building a compelling portfolio to optimizing your CV, preparing for interviews, and even refining your job search strategy, these tools can be invaluable in helping you land your dream job. However, the key to success still lies in combining AI efficiency with your unique skills, experiences, and personal touch. Making sure you use AI ethically and strategically is key, enabling you to stay ahead in a competitive job market and secure the perfect role that aligns with your career goals.
