Abu Dhabi is the capital and second most populous city in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) after Dubai. Abu Dhabi lies on a T-shaped island jutting into the Persian Gulf from the central western coast. Approximately 1.45 million people live in Abu Dhabi, 80% of whom are expatriates.

Oil and gas are the main industries in the UAE which underpin the huge financial prosperity enjoyed in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. During recent years the government has implemented projects to help diversify the economy and help to reduce the dependence on oil. This strategy has been particularly successful resulting in a broad range of IT jobs in Abu Dhabi and Dubai becoming available in many different industry sectors including banking, insurance, financial services, telecoms, tourism, consultancy and software development.

Working in Abu Dhabi

The working week in the UAE is similar to that of many other countries. Those who work in Abu Dhabi usually work five days a week from 9am to 5pm. Unlike the UK however Friday is usually the day of rest and Saturday is the second day off.

The dress code for business is similar to that in the UK and Europe. Despite the heat men are expected to wear suits with a shirt and tie and women are expected to wear formal office attire.

Applying for IT jobs in Abu Dhabi

Employers in Abu Dhabi want to see high-levels of formal qualifications and substantial work experience from candidates. As such, all CV’s and covering letters submitted need to be tailored with great emphasis placed on relevant skills and experience. Any Middle Eastern work based experience or language abilities is of course always advantageous.

Living in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi offers those looking to relocate a high standard of living in a tax free environment with exceptional weather all year round.

Abu Dhabi is an ideal place to bring up a family and enjoy the finer things in life. To take advantage of the Middle Eastern hustle, bustle and bright lights, Dubai is only a 90-minute drive away.

Unlike in Dubai, expats are unable to buy their accommodation. Most expats living and working in Abu Dhabi have either an allowance for accommodation or have a contribution built into their salaries.

Rental prices for accommodation in Abu Dhabi vary depending upon location. The closer you are to the Corniche (the main road next to the sea), the more you are likely to pay, and if you choose to live further away from the main city and general amenities, prices can be substantially less expensive.
