The economy in America has shown strong signs of recovery after the global recession and is still known as an economic giant. Employees in America usually work a 40 hour week (Monday to Friday 9-5.30 with half an hour lunch). Although it is common for employers to allow earlier or later working hours as long as those house are worked.

It may be surprising to hear, but it is not compulsory for employers to offer paid holiday in America. Larger companies tend to offer good holiday packages to attract good quality staff but this is not universal. The average holiday allowance is 10-20 days at their discretion and they don’t always offer paid sick leave or maternity. However, they do have 10/11 public holidays which most offices and business close on.

The easiest way to find a job in America would be with an organisation in your home country, which has offices in the USA and opportunities to transfer.

However, if you aren’t able to find a job through your current company, you’ll need a visa to work in America. To find out what visa is right for you, visit the US Department of State website. You will also need to apply for a green card in order to live and work in America. If you have specialist skills and qualifications employers may sponsor your visa but this can be hard to secure.

Living in America

Moving to America can be both an exciting and overwhelming process. The cost of living in many cities within America is relatively low and the majority of people who are based there find that they have a very comfortable standard of life. House prices in America are fairly low compared to other countries but do expect higher prices in the larger cities such as New York.

In terms of tax, it can be very complex. Employees can expect to pay federal income tax, state or city tax, social security tax and a Medicare levy. The rate you are taxed at will depend on your earnings, social situation and residency status, and the majority of people will need to file tax returns annually.
