Before the pandemic in 2020, it was predicted that on average only  27% of people worked from home at some point according to Annual Population Survey (APS) data. This increased to an average of 37% in 2020, following government guidance to work from home where possible.

Post pandemic, the public have been able to go back to the office, however, a lot of companies have adopted a remote working style that offers either flexible or fully remote working. Not all roles can be remote, but there are many roles within the tech and IT sector that can certainly offer more flexibility.

Which IT & Tech Jobs can you do remotely?

  • Data Architect
  • Data Engineer
  • Software Engineer
  • Software Developer
  • DevOps Engineer

These are just a few examples of IT & Tech jobs that can be done remotely.

According to the Gartner 2021 Digital Worker Experience Survey, 43% of people said that flexible working helped them achieve greater productivity, and 30% said that less or no time commuting enabled them to be more productive.

Which companies offer flexible IT working?

Primark

Primark has introduced a ‘Your Day, Your Way’ initiative to offer flexible working so they can get the best from their employees as they grow their business. They’ve said ‘Technology is changing the way we work and while the traditional working day might suit some, many of us need more flexibility. That’s why we’re giving our people the freedom to plan their working day in a way that suits them.’

Barclays

Another company that has taken the transition to flexible working is Barclays. Not only does it offer employees integration with work and life commitments, but it enhances wellbeing and effectiveness in the workplace.

What is the future of flexible working in IT?

Flexible working is quickly becoming the most popular way to work, with 85% of working adults currently homeworking, wanting a ‘hybrid’ approach of both home and office working in the future.

The shift to hybrid working also meant a lot of companies integrated cloud computing meaning workers can get the files they need not only at any time but from any device with internet access. Not all companies can afford to have their own in-house tech team, so a lot of these companies outsource their IT support, which most likely offers flexible working.

The 2021 UK IT Sourcing Study, conducted by Whitelane Research suggested that two-thirds of organisations plan to continue or increase IT outsourcing in the next two years. Meaning for those who don’t want to work with a company could consider freelancing or starting their own specialist IT support company.
