With the job market as it is, it is essential to make yourself stand out from the crowd and clearly demonstrate why you think you should be hired for the position that you are applying for.

Here’s what you can do to help you land your dream job:

1. Ensure you make a lasting impression

Employers are looking for someone who has gone the extra mile. Make sure you make a lasting impression by researching the company and spending a reasonable amount of time going through the job description and evaluating how the job role fits in to the company as a whole. Having this type of knowledge can really demonstrate to the hiring manager that you have invested time and effort in to finding out about them and how much you want the job.

2. Support your skills with a story

Hiring managers read CV’s every day telling them about “excellent communication skills” and “great team players”, however the candidates that stand out are those that use a story to demonstrate their skills. Show the employer how you go about getting things done. For example when telling them about how you are highly organized and work to deadlines, demonstrate it with a situation where you overcame obstacles in order to complete a project before deadline and with outstanding results. By including a story, your passion and excitement for your work will shine through.

3. Focus on your CV

First impressions count, and your CV is the first chance you get to make an impression on the hiring manager. To make a strong first impression make sure your CV is full of your best achievements in a short snappy way – Hiring managers don’t have time to read each CV in depth so by making it as easy as possible for them to find the information that is key to your application, you’re more likely to make it through to the next stage.

4. Customize your application

A one size fits all CV may have worked in the past but in such a fierce job market customization and tailoring is key to helping you stand out. In every aspect of your application you should strive to keep all your communication as relevant to the position you are applying for as possible.

5. Add Value

Show the employer where you add value to their business or team. Know what your skills are worth, find out how they would fit in to the company and how you could make the most of the role they are hoping to fill. Demonstrating all this makes you hard to turn down!

Good luck!
