If you are looking to start your IT career, or you are looking to specialise in an area of IT, there are a range of certifications that will provide you with greater career choices and opportunities.

CompTIA A+

The CompTIA A+ certification is designed to make sure you are familiar with the fundamentals of dealing with hardware, networks, and computer systems to help you get an entry-level employment in IT.  It is commonly regarded as one of the essential credentials for a thorough introduction to IT at an entry-level. After the CompTIA A+, candidates can go on to take other CompTIA certifications to further their skill set, including Security+ or Network+.

Microsoft Fundamentals

In 2023 41% of IT and tech jobs require an understanding of Microsoft products. Therefore, it would be wise to consider the Microsoft Fundamentals certifications if you want to secure a high-level IT support job. The fundamentals certifications test core technology skills, you can opt to take any one exam in a number of specialised areas that fall under security, Azure (Microsoft’s cloud solution), AI, data, and software like Power Platform, Microsoft 365, and Dynamics.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) Cloud Practitioner

AWS is one of the most popular cloud platforms globally, and of all the AWS certificates, the AWS Cloud Practitioner is the most basic. It is ideal for those just starting out in IT and will help you obtain the fundamental knowledge of AWS. The associate-level AWS certification, which is a level above the practitioner certification, is required for many cloud-related employment. The associate-level AWS Solutions Architect, SysOps Administrator, or Developer certifications may be a better fit for you if you already have a year of AWS experience.

Google IT Support Professional Certificate

This certificate allows you to gain all the skills required to succeed in an entry-level IT job. From learning to perform day-to-day IT support tasks including computer assembly, wireless networking, installing programs, and customer service to identifying problems, troubleshooting and debugging. You will also gain experience using systems including Linux, Domain Name Systems, Command-Line Interface, and Binary Code.

IBM IT Support Professional Certificate

This IBM certification is an employer-recognised and allows you to develop key skills for a career in IT and Technical Support. You will build essential computer networking, cybersecurity, and cloud computing skills that IT Support and Helpdesk specialists need to be successful.

Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA)

The CCNA certification addresses the basics of IT networking challenges. This covers IP connectivity, IP services, and network access. Although it's not a vendor-neutral certification (you'll only be tested on Cisco tools and products) network experts favour it because of Cisco's dominance in the networking industry. Although there are no requirements for the exam, Cisco advises having a year of training and networking experience.
