i run cre8tive solutions and while i dont specifically have a coldfusion developer on board just now i can source one quickly.

Hiya
you have 3 months in which to register as self employed with HMRC, if you take longer than this you may be subject to a fine.
first thing i would do is download the "thinking of working for yourself" leaflet from the HMRC website.
in terms of actuallly securing work its just a matter of building up your portfolio.

Overseas Work
Hiya
i normally ask for a deposit as well and ALWAYS insist on a Service Level Agreement being signed. This covers you even if you dont secure a deposit.
If you dont get either then simply do the work on spec and when presenting your work do it on a "own hosted solution". I.E dont have over the work until you have the readies :). you wouldnt go into a shop...
