I'm starting to do a bit of freelance design outside of my day job, which is also as a graphic designer.
I will probably only do 2 or 3 jobs a year for a few hundred quid a time. Do I need to register as self employed or is there some other way I can declare my earnings. When I actually earn them
I like to be above board but I bet I don't even earn £1000 a year, so self employed seems like a strong word!
Does anyone else work like this?

I was going to wait to see if anyone else replied to this, because I'm pretty much in the same boat as you. I'm working full time and freelancing for the odd job here and there in spare time.
When I contacted the Inland Revenue they said you'd still need to register self employed, and then when you get your tax return you just put your full time work down as another income. They then work out the tax you'd need to pay for just the freelance stuff since your PAYE tax is automatically deducted.
Apparently you have 3 months to register self employed from the date of your first invoice. I've been working for friends up until this point but am now doing my first bit of 'commercial' work and, like you, I want to make sure it's all above board.
Anyway my advice would be to ring the Inland Revenue and ask them what is best to do. You don't have to register then and there if you're only THINKING about freelancing, so they won't be on your back about tax straight away!!
Good luck & best wishes -

I work part time as an employed designer whilst building up my own freelance business - I do have quite a lot of work on and contacted my accountant for the best advise. He gave me simple form which also asked me for my employers name and address - this was sent off to the tax office - there done and dusted - took 2 mins - therefore I know I am covered and keeping some money in my business account for any tax I have to pay - ( BTW alliance and leicester have the best business package - FREE 2 years banking )Nammie -

Well the job I was going to do fell through but it's still a thought for the future. Can I just ask Sunflower if he is now registered as self employed by filling out that form??
I'll wait and see if any new work comes if it does I'll register as self employed within 3 months.
Thanks for the input guys... does anyone else have experience in this area? -

Huey you'd probably be better off with a separate bank account, you can do it from your personal one to a point, but if you started getting a lot of work you'd need a separate one anyway, so might as well start as you mean to go on.
Makes it easier keeping up with your accounts, expenses etc
Good luck to everyone, it's also worth noting that the inland revenue send you on free business courses - I'm going to one on the 10th July so I'll let you know if it's worth it! -

Hello,
Im a graphic designer in part time employment and I do freelance work when I can which Im trying to build up to something I can do solely.
Ive just read your message about banking. Abbey National do a free business banking forever, see their website. The restrictions I find arent a problem,
ideal for freelance graphic designers who get paid by cheque, If we were like a high street shop it would be difficult with fiddly little amounts of cheques, cash and credit cards. Its a very simple account, no fuss. I use the account
on-line. So far so good.
Hope this helps. Good luck.:byeMacBart -

the form you have to fill in from the inland revenue is the 'CWF1' you should be able to download it off of the website, then you're free to trade!! -

Messages count : 2Likes count : 0Registration : 17 July 2007Hi... I'm in a similar boat. I'm unemployed at the moment, but I've been offered some freelance work. I've never officially done this before, and I'm not registered as a freelancer (I've been temping in various jobs for the last couple of years). Do I need to do so straight away if I'm to do any freelance work, and if so, does it cost anything to register, as my current funds are as close to zero as makes no odds?
