UK v US hosting

There have been a few comments about UK v US hosting. The main/only reason to consider UK hosting is if you plan to host UK domains, and are worried about Google rankings/SEO.

Google determines a site's locality based upon the IP address of the host server and the domain name. So, a.uk domain should be fine if hosted in the US. However, a .com domain for a UK company should be hosted on UK servers.

I, and many others, take no risks, and ensure that even .uk domains are hosted in the UK

Google is increasingly using localised results, and this is now a major hosting consideration

Certainly cheap. But you do get what you pay for. As a web designer I look at the HTML and was appalled. of course, Jo Public would not do this. And this is the challenge us web designers face.

Mr Site might be the perfect solution for some. I won't get on my pedestal and preach what's wrong with thier sites. But if you are expecting your site to be treated niceyl by Google and other search engines, or care about your site being legally accessible, I'd look at other options.

Their payment model confuses me. You can transfer (FTP) the site onto your own servers, but you must continue to pay monthly. How do they control that?

why for mac users? a web site should not be just for mac users... ir is that your target market?

I agree with MickeyFinn. Stick to what you're good at. But if you have a good design then supply that in PhotoShop format and a good web developer can turn that into a web design.

You need to think about the content/copy s much as the design. When you know what you want, get a few prices. If your budget is tight, go for a one-age solution at first. Don't be tempted to do it yourslef. If it looks home-grown it might not help your prospects

the great rate debate

Hi there.

The rate debate has been asked before. Check out the blog below and you'll find heaps of replies to this question

Joshuaink: How much do you charge?

I'm just starting out freelance, having been a contract java web developer for many years. Personally, even if I value myself at say £35/hour, I can't honestly cost a job at this rate (yet?). I always quote fixed price. I attempt to evaluate how many hours are involved and multiply this by my rate... but I'd never win a job! so, I think it's a mixture of valunig your time and remaining competitive.

I doubt I'll ever get rich designing web sites.. but I'll enjoy it!
