From jobs in the past - I have been told (and might stand corrected):
If you are going to produce a leaflet with a section designed to be detached and completed, make sure that the section to be detached is less than 25% and you won’t be charged VAT.
If it can be classed as a leaflet - VAT should not be charged on the printing.
But there is a line between what is classed as a leaflet & what is classed as a 'pricelist'.
That probably isnt very helpfull but there are stacks of pages out there with lots more info on!

Not sure if this question is best asked here or in the CAD forum.
I've been using FormZ 3d for a number of years now and I'm looking into options for a bit of an update.
Would Cinema 4D be a bit OTT for 3d exhibition stand and interior design / visuals? I've not seen much evidence of exhibition stand visuals in the C4D user galleries... but it does seem to have lots of benefits over the version of FormZ that I'm currently working with.
I'm quite keen on C4D as I was hoping to expand my skills and services + Mac based suits me fine!
Thanks for reading.

For the last umpteen years I've been using an Epson A3 inkjet (1290 I think).
Anyway, 'banding' on my prints seems to become more common and I waste ages doing head cleaning and alignment tests :mad2
Basically I need to produce high quality A3 size visuals, I've found that Jessops sell a fair thick matt paper that works really well and sets my work apart from the usual gloss photo paper that everyone else seems to be using, just wondered if anyone wanted to share their views on A3 size inkjet printers.

Hi Keith
I'm not sure if this will be any help at all - but have you tried / are you a member of pistonheads.com? I know there are a few freelance motoring writers on there, you could try asking in the general motoring forum or have a look in the jobs forum on there too.
Best Of Luck!

Evening all!
Its been a while since I've been here, but wondered if I could pick your collective brains.
I've got a PR / Product launch coming up and I'm looking for some interesting print ideas to post out in advance.
As we are at the concept stage I'm going to look into die-cut flyer options or possibly some spot-gloss options.
I was also thinking of developing a micro-site to be advertised on the flyers and carry this theme into the signage / visuals on the day.
Can anyone else through in a few ideas worth researching from past experience? Time and budget is on my side for a change!

Just a quick couple of questions on keynote.
I've never used it - but I'm thinking I might start getting my head round it, two companies near me use it alot for producing big presentations for thier clients.
I hear its like powerpoint - but much better (I have very little knowledge of PP - but hate it already!)
Is Keynote easy to get good results / learn fast?
Does anyone here offer it as a freelance service & what do you typically charge?
Many Thanks For Reading.

Hi all.
Recently one of my clients asked for 60off A3 prints of a few visuals I had produced.
I gave the work to my local, regular printer - along with a request for 9off A2 prints.
All of this work was VERY last minute... however, I've just had the bill and I've been charged £2.50 ex vat per A3 print. What can I realistically charge my client? they were printed on a satin finish standard 80grm paper - nothing special - just good quality from a colour copier. (I'm thinking this is a bit steep – even tho Staples charge over £3.00 per copy)
However for the A2 prints I was only charged £7 ex Vat - which I think was fair.
Taking into account I had to also supply these on Bank Holiday Monday - any opinions on what to charge? (all design work is being billed as a different job - I'm just talking about the printing)

Hello all!
I've been putting the same group of rather dated 80's American Business people into my 3d renders for years... anyone know a good place to find some upto date looking people / cars / plants... ideally hi-res jpegs.
Many thanks
stovey

Thanks for the advice... I've been doing logo designs for £50 a pop... this usually includes a few sides of concepts then the client picks one to be worked into a final design 😮 Maybe I should rethink this price guide!!

Thanks for reading through my rather long post there DMD 🙂
That helps loads - £15 sounds decent.. and your right about working in the 'busy fool' rut - Thats why I'm here - in a bid to break that!
As for the designer that charges £40 - £60 per hour, that was for exhibition work and to be honest I think he is from a slightly different era to most of us!
Just as a bit of a follow on question - what do people charge for a logo design these days? (excluding the recent london 2012 project!)

Hello all.
My first day here and I think I need some advice (sorry this is mostly waffle!)
My background:
HND & BA in art design & multimedia
4 years in-house designer
3 years freelance (current)... it just happened! - not planned.
Anyway:
I mostly design & visualise exhibition stands but also fill in my time with graphic design and print supply work.
The reason for this post, cutting a long story short - people say I'm cheap & I don't like charging lots of money... I'd rather be a busy fool.
However I nearly fell off my chair when I found out an 'older' designer is charging £65per hour to end users and £45per hour to contractors - I think this is SILLY money.
Yesterday:
I was asked to produce a quote for a logo design - I usually produce about 3 sides of ideas then let the client choose one... they picked two.
For this I charge £50 ex vat to get the ball rolling.
Data sheets:
Basically, double sided, A5 sized sheets with same background image that I developed - logo - data and a few pictures & specification lists.
These have also been designed to be produced at A4 at a later date.
There is 5 in total - I was thinking about £50 ex vat for each
Also need to produce comp slip & letter head - £15 each?
Background:
It a client just starting up - but from a long history working with me - its a cheep job but looks hi-tech... I just didnt want to go in expensive from the start :eyes Also - a couple of meetings at the clients home.
I know its VERY hard to make comparisons - but what are you guys charging?
Also I'm going to quote for the print - and add a slight mark-up on this too.

Hi I'm very new here - but as a designer I have been VAT reg for the last 3 years and cannot see why anyone would'nt be - unless you are mainly working for the public (ie people that are not generally VAT reg either).
Most of my clients are contractors and therefore all can claim the VAT that I charge.
It also means I can get the VAT back on my diesel and things like computers + certain print jobs that I get produced on my clients behalf... but there are a few things that you cannot claim VAT back for ie: certain types of print jobs.
Also you cannot charge a client VAT if your not registered.
Another reason that someone I work with mentioned - it can look a bit more professional if you are VAT reg.
