When you have designed a website for your clients, do you place the website on your own web hosting space, or do you get them to buy space from a webhost?

I have my own dedicated server so i offer hosting too. I will always offer to register any domains and host anything they need, bit won't force it on them if they have other ideas and i'll always explain everything.
It does work out well though as, if you get enough clients, you can get a regular income from hosting websites alone!

However for search engines it is sometimes considered good to have server located within your locality but this is not a big issue if you are properly doing optimization for website.
I charge £1.99/month for windows or linux hosting on my own server which is shared with others thats why its cheaper. This is a budget solution however I suggest clients with huge traffic and bandwidth requirements to get an appropriate solution from my list of solutions. -
