Cold Calling/Emailing
I've got a list of agencies and studios that I'm going to contact for possible freelance work but I'm finding it difficult to write a decent letter.

I'm in the same boat up here mate.
The advice I've been given is to forget about a mass mailing of the same letter/email to agencies, and to pick out ones who's work I admire.
Pinpoint places whos work would be complimented best by your strengths or style, and try and engage them with something more than just a letter. Try and promote yourself basically. Don't push for a job, just ask for some advice on your portfolio or if you could possibly do a placement.
However I know a couple of people who have secured placements with a confident phone call or two.
