Without industry experience the leads and the confidence in your abilities will hamper you. Have you thought about getting a permie job in this field for a few years to give you the knowledge and confidence a freelancer needs?
You are doing the right things to land a permie job, your enthusiasm and desire to do the work will land you a job. A few bits for friends and family will get you a job and then taking on freelance work while in employment will get you to the stage where freelancing in your chosen field becomes a lot easier.
