The University of Southampton seeks to appoint a Digital Media Technician to be based in the Film Department. This post is offered full-time but we welcome job-share applications at 0.4FTE and 0.6FTE.
Film Studies at Southampton has an excellent reputation for teaching and research. We are based within the School of Humanities in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities and have close interdisciplinary links with other members of the Faculty and the wider University. Humanities at Southampton encompasses a diverse range of subjects, providing high-quality teaching within a vibrant research culture. The Film Department contributes to that environment, enabling staff and students across the School to study film, television, and digital media by engaging in humanities teaching, research, and enterprise.
About you - As the Digital Media Technician for Film, you will play a central role in providing an outstanding service to staff and students, using the Video Editing Suite facilities and IT and AV equipment and software to complete a range of tasks, including managing the use and maintenance of equipment, delivering inductions and demonstrations, and providing specialist advice. In addition, you will also supervise the workflow in the Video Editing Suite, and act as a liaison with the Digital Humanities Hub, iSolutions, and Estates to install, monitor, maintain, and repair Film equipment, systems, software, and facilities across the Avenue Campus.
We welcome applications from those with experience as a technician in a research and education context, while we are also interested in candidates with a broad range of technical backgrounds and interests who are looking to develop their skills as a technician in a Humanities context. As you will instruct both staff and students on a range of digital humanities tools in support of research, learning, and assessment, we are also looking for a candidate with some pedagogical experience and good communication skills. We anticipate growth in the use of digital media within our programmes that will offer opportunities for this role to develop in responsibility and scope (with appropriate training and support for the candidate).
What we can offer you - You will join a team of dedicated educators and researchers, supported by recent investments in both Film and Digital Humanities. The University of Southampton became a signatory of the Technician Commitment on 30 October 2018 and has pledged to act against the key challenges affecting technical staff in four key areas: visibility, recognition, career development and sustainability. For more information on the Technician Commitment, visit our website. For an informal discussion of the post, please contact Professor Shelley Cobb (Head of the Department of Film) by email.
