How do I create this effect

Hello

I want to create a logo with this effect.

Does anybody Know the best way to create this.

My instinct are to build it up with layers in photoshop but im not sure if this is the best programme to use as it will need to be printed in large format. Thought it would be best to create a vector in illustrator? But im not as hot on effects in illustrator

Don't know if this helps, but that effect is created by the 'attenuation' of light travelling through a tinted semi-transparent surface.........a resonably quick procedure in 3d.........although you'd need to build the 3d logo first of course.

I guess you could do it as layered gradients [in PS] but it all depends how much time you've got to spend on it.

Ive never used any 3D programmes but I have managed to create it in illustrator but now i have the problems as posted in "where can i download plug-ins". Im tearing my hair out now.
