I was working as an Engineer (i gave up freelance design for a change) then had to have a major operation... i'm now paid SSP.
Am i also allowed to do freelance design work as £70 (SSP pay) a week isn't enough to pay the bills (i have no trouble in sitting at a PC/doing this kind of work)?
Any help much appreciated.

Are you able to nip down to the local CAB tomorrow, or at least get on the phone to a benefits helpline to clarify your position? It may be that, if your employer agrees that you are able to do one type of work but not the type they were paying you for, you would be able to take on something else. However, I'm not sure whether this applies to looking for something new, as opposed to a second job you were already doing.
In any case, if you're in financial difficulties there may be other benefits you could apply for and you need to talk this over with the experts.
Best thing would be if your existing employer could find you computer-based work while you're recovering - or did you try that one?
