We're looking for an exceptional Senior Linux Engineer to help us make a difference to our planet.

As our Senior Linux Engineer the job may be suitable for hybrid working, which is where an employee works part of the week in the office and part of the week from home. This is a voluntary, non-contractual arrangement and the location advertised will be your contractual place of work.

Your world of expertise

You will be joining the Linux Team, which is part of the wider Infrastructure Technology team within the Met Office. Our Linux estate underpins a wide-ranging variety of weather services that are delivered to customers worldwide, meaning that that they can stay safe and thrive. We also provide a platform to our Scientists that allow them to deliver the world class science that is associated with the Met Office.

Working within our team of Linux experts, your focus will be on leading the team, ensuring that they have all the tools and skills to support the Linux estate as well as keeping it secure and compliant. We look for ways to improve the services that we deliver and innovative ways to use the latest technology across all that we do. We also work alongside projects that require our knowledge and expertise, ranging from the latest Supercomputer to building new weather services. Working in the Linux team provides a great opportunity to showcase your Linux skills, bringing the best out of others and helping the Met Office delivers its goals.

Your key duties

  • Providing technical advice and guidance to team members. Leading the Linux team, ensuring that they have the skills and tools to meet the demands placed upon them.

  • Represent the Linux team within the Met Office, communicating with users, stakeholders, and suppliers, ensuring that service levels are maintained. Lead a culture of service improvement, identifying opportunities to enhance the services that the Linux team deliver to its users.

  • Engage with project managers, technical architects and installation engineers during IT and infrastructure projects to ensure that the Met Office maintains its operational effectiveness and technical consideration is taken with regards to Linux services.

  • Ensure the Met Office Linux estate is secure and compliant, addressing issues as they arise and taking the appropriate escalation paths when required.

As our Senior Linux Engineer, your total reward package will be up to £62,939 annually, which includes:

  • £41,725 base pay

  • An outstanding Civil Service pension, with an average employer contribution of 27%

  • Recruitment Retention Allowance (RRA) you will be paid £5,300 per annum as a market supplement to reflect the demand for your skills. Whilst in post, you will be paid this market driven allowance from April 2024 until September 2025 in your monthly pay

  • Annual Leave starting at 27.5 days (plus Bank Holidays) rising to 32.5 days (plus Bank Holidays) after 5 years and option to buy or sell up to 5 days per year of annual leave

Essential Criteria, skills and experience:

  1. Good interpersonal skills with the ability to manage, motivate, develop, and empower a team of skilled IT professionals. (We're better together)

  2. Excellent planning and organisational skills with the ability to juggle competing priorities and timescales. (We live and breathe it)

  3. Exceptional communication skills both written and verbally with the ability to describe complex technical issues, both to a technical and non-technical audience. (We're better together)

  4. The ability to foster a service improvement culture within the team. Look for ways to ensure that service delivery levels are exceeded as well as making sure the team deliver a quality service. (We keep evolving)

  5. Proven experience of managing a complex IT estate, utilising service management best practices. Maintain security standards ensuring that we stay complaint. (We're experts by nature)
