Hi
I would like to know if / how freelancers charge for meeting clients.
If the client agrees to meet with you locally, would you charge by the hour as from the time of the appointment?
Do you charge for the initial consultation?
Any advice would be most welcome. So far, I've only worked without having to meet the client.

If they're after consultancy work and i'd be going into their offices to discuss their marketing strategies and the like then yes, i would charge for my time and knowledge, but not to meet to discuss work, if that makes sense?

Assuming you feel a charge should be levied for the loss of your time, wouldn't the client be just as justified in presenting YOU a bill at the end of the meeting!? Of course, a social, non-profit outfit might be less inclined to return your invoice with their own.
That said, do let me know how you fare if you decide to charge for a meeting/consultation! -

I never charge for initial consultations as clients may feel uneasy about this and not want to meet up.
If your consultation is free and your presentation and portfolio speaks for itself, you likely to get the job. -

Thank you all for your replies. I am sorry I should have given more details in my initial post.
The work to be done is designing graphics for labels and tags for clothes. The client is an ex-colleague of mine and he had materials/fabrics to show me for the project. I know he could have emailed these as pictures but he is not knowledgeable in computer stuff, attaching files by email etc. It's terrible.
Anyway I had decided not to charge for the meeting, nor to agree to meet again when he could have asked someone in his office to do the emails for him.
